Be sure to hit down and through the golf ball

One mistake that’s often seen from average golfers is that they try to help the ball in the air with their irons or wedges as opposed to letting their swing and club do the work.

Ideally, when hitting solid iron and wedge shots, you want to hit down and through the ball, which can be a strange concept for many to grasp.

In this video segment, however, SwingFix instructor Tom Stickney will explain why you need to be hitting down and through the ball and he has a great drill to help you achieve that goal.

Try this drill the next time you’re on the range and you’ll likely see immediate improvement in how crisply you strike the ball.

Sweep the ball to stop topping your driver

The topped driver is one of the most embarrassing shot in golf. What happens on the topped shot? The primary flaw is not keeping your right shoulder low enough as you move through the impact zone.

In this swing tip video, Brian Mogg, Director of Instruction at the Waldorf Astoria Golf Academy, shares a tip straight out of the title sequence of The Andy Griffith Show.

Mogg says to imagine skipping a rock on a lake, and to actually toss a golf ball or two using that same motion. In order to skip a stone, your shoulder has to be low throughout the release.

Now, with your driver, keep you back shoulder low through impact, and you'll sweep the driver through the ball, and the tops will stop.

Load into your back leg for stability, power

Balance is crucial to consistent contact and power. In order to maintain balance, you need to feel connected to the ground.

Likewise, you hear a lot of golf instructors talk about how power starts from the ground up.

In this swing tip video, SwingFix instructor Justin Bruton, the Director of Golf at the Biltmore Golf Course in Miami, shows you how to work on loading your weight onto your back foot and pushing off that pivot to increase power.

Focusing on your base like this will improve your balance, too, which should improve contact.
